About Pham Kitchen

Hi! My name is Thu and I welcome you to Pham Kitchen!

I was born in the northern part of Vietnam. My mom taught me how to cook rice when I was 7, in a way that a 7-year-old would understand: add just enough water to reach the first knuckle of my index finger. It came out perfect, not too dry not to soggy. At this young age, I could cook rice without using a rice cooker. When my mom came home from work she would make other dishes. Later, she taught me how to boil vegetables, then sauté vegetables and eventually how to cook main dishes.

My mom loved making special food for holidays like Christmas and the Lunar New Year, and she spent all day preparing these meals for my large family and many friends. During those occasions, I helped her when she made a complicated dish like chung cake (sticky rice cake). I helped her choose and clean the dong leaves that were used to wrap chung cake and I would tie the cakes with bamboo strings. She puts a lot of love in her cooking, and by observing and helping her, I have learned to also cook with love.

Having moved from my hometown in the north to Saigon in the south, I had opportunities to cook and taste many southern-style dishes, typical of the kind of cooking of the Mekong Delta. Southern cooking is much sweeter tasting than that of the north. I love both styles and mix them in my cooking.

Currently, I’m living in New York and cooking for family and friends. They love it and encourage me to share authentic northern and southern style Vietnamese cuisine. For me, cooking is a type of meditation and a way of honoring my cultural heritage. My mom also taught me that food is a wonderful way to deliver love — thanks Mom!
